Flash memory is nonvolatile, so whatever was on there is probably still there, providing that the 200 didn't wipe anything during its seizure. >Any suggestions? That's quite understandable. HP will repair such damage, although it might be useful to wait and see if it fixes itself. Prop the PC card door open to allow whatever's left to evaporate. After a day or so, put the batteries back in and see if it works. Failing that, you can send it to Corvallis, and they'll fix it for whatever it costs to replace the bad part (the mother- board, probably). But, 200LXes are legendary for durability; many have anecdotes of their computers falling to the lake, toilet, kitchen sink, etc. Yours has a fighting chance; and if it doesn't come out of it on its own, like I said, HP will fix it for you. Man, that's got to be a bummer. I would suggest you either try rinsing it thoroughly with purified water, then letting it dry on its own, or rinsing it with some sort of solvent to remove the urine. Have you ever taken it apart? If so, it would be best to do that before cleaning it; that way you can make sure all the places get thoroughly clean. Also, it's probably a good idea to let it air-dry. > No, I haven't backed anything up (the cable just arrived last night). What about the flash card... did you have anything backed up on there? Generally they're pretty durable. Have you any means of testing it other than in the 200LX? > Any suggestions? I can understand. But don't get too down. A good cleaning will most likely bring back your hardware, if not your data. The water will remove most any of the conducting contamination without effecting most components. Most if not all of the components in the LX are sealed. I have to agree with the previous posts about rinsing the unit with water in some manner. The easiest, but probably less thorough, would somehow rinse it as is, case and all. If you're experienced with dismantling your palmtop, you could probably do a better job rinsing at the circuit card level. I don't know how this would work with the palmtop, but one standard PWA (Printed Wiring Assembly) manufacturing process is cleaning, where any excess flux and debris is washed from the board. Different techniques are used, but we use a dishwasher (without soap) here at work. (Of course, this requires that we use water soluable flux). Don't know if the palmtop PWAs are suitable for a dishwasher or not - some boards have paper-based components or items, which would clearly be a no-no. But I wouldn't let the urine stay. If you already have a busted unit, I would think rinsing it with clean (distilled would be fine) water either at the assembly or PWA level would be important. The sooner the better. If you were to subsequently give up and send it to HP for servicing, I don't think they could complain about such a cleansing - it would have been far worse to let the urine sit there for 2 weeks. (They might complain if you had dismantled the unit - don't know). Just my $0.02 worth. Shier Systems is in Westlake Village, but I'm not sure they can offer much in the way of repair services. I suppose you have nothing to lose by following other posters' suggestion to remove all the batteries and rinse the unit in distilled / purified / demineralized (I forget which) water, and letting it dry. Perhaps you should do the same for the flashcard and take it to someone (or a store) with a laptop and see if the files are intact. Good luck. Might want to keep an eye out for a spare used 200LX. I do not use my HP200 to access my mail or connect in any way to a server. I do, however, use my HP200 to connect to my PC, transfer my email in the Eudora .MBX format. In this way, I can read my mail at any time - even "during those boring meetings." I have transfered book chapters, news, anything on the internet can find its way to my HP. Reading a mailbox file as a text file using the memo function is actually very efficient and fast if you use the find function. In reading the letters on this mailing list for instance, I search for the word "Status:" which appears as the last line of the header. The beginning of each message, therefor, is readily accessible. I save desired information for later use by cutting and pasting from the memo function to a phonebook set up to receive the information. I have a "phonebook" called HPLX as well as many other phonebooks to accept informaton from cooking mailing lists or business related mailing lists. I realize that this information would be useful to few but I am always interested in how others use this wonderful machine and thought I would contribute this. Because of this I have become quite proficient in using Phonebooks on my HPLX and on my desktop and moving them back and forth between the two readily and easily. I have a Phonebook that is titled "TOPALM.PDB" and I know that that is a one-way phonebook going from my PC to my Palm and not the reverse. Only once did I erase (or overwrite) a phonebook. It seems that whenver I don't use the adapter I will get an error message stating that I lost the connection even though I haven't lost it. Tonight I backedup my entire flashcard (40 megs) using my AC adapter while uding Transfile and I had clear sailing the entire way. It's worth a try. My question back, before I answer, is What will you do with it on the palmtop? You must be aware of the significant computational resources required by SQL to do its stuff. You must be aware that even a double-speeded palmtop is only about 16MHz, and is about as fast as a PC-AT! So you won't get back any results that will be pleasant. (sort of like this: turn it on, start the application, and go away for a month!) Secondly, SQL's power is in its ability to process huge amounts of data. Tables on the order of millions of rows! This only takes oh, 200-300GIGA Bytes. Where do you propose to store the stuff? (I know Bernard Torbik announced that at the end of the week he starts selling 190MB PCMCIAs! - but that is nothing compared to the data normally processed by such applications. So no power, and no way to store the data leaves this an "inappropriate" application to run on the palmtop. Inappropriate in the sense that it makes no sense! Avi M. Dean Yes, they do it a lot! No idea what exactly they di for you. How do you know the password is incorrect? Are you getting some indication, message? In the case of pop3 password, probably what they have done is make two pairs od id/password. One to login into their network. The second pair is for accessing email. Did you get any message from them telling you you need to set up another login/password with them? if not, You can try this too: Run SETUP.EXE. Press the menu button for Mail. Then tab to the login and password field and type your login and password. Good luck. Let me know at support@dasoft how this worked out, or if you get more info from the ISP. Avi M. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Today I dropped my palmtop from just about hip height onto a hard surface. It landed squarely on its bottom. This has been about the 24th time I've dropped the poor thing (dropped it twice last week) but this was the FIRST TIME it refused to start up! PANIC MODE. Turning it on only resulted in an all black screen. If I pressed some keys like ctl-alt-del or the reset sequence, sometimes it would beep, other times the screen would cycle unevenly through various shades. Thinking I had nothing else to lose, I removed all the batteries (all my data is kept on the flash card so at least I need it would be recoverable) and opened up the palmtop. I have never done this before but I didn't see what harm could come of it. I couldn't see anything wrong so I put it back together and hoped that it would come up ok when I turned it on (yeah, I use that process on my Jeep, too ). It didn't work. Then I spent a half hour going through the various newsgroups looking for used HPs for sale. I wanted to buy one RIGHT NOW. Having fired off a bunch of emails (and hoping I didn't sound too desperate), I got back to my work. 45 minutes later, back at my desk, I decided to open it up again. This time I noticed that after I separated the motherboard from the lower case, the ribbon cable which is attached to the screen was no longer attached to the underside of the motherboard. I figured out how to re-attach it and hopefully thought that I had found the problem (although the last time I opened it up, the cable was attached). Turned it on. No luck. Now the screen stayed clear...no sequence of keys would produce anything on the screen, no even the all-black display. "Oh, what the hell," I thought. I opened it up one more time and while I was poking at stuff, I decided to disconnect the ribbon cable. When I removed it, I noticed that it was possible to slide it into the socket through the bottom of the slide-in snap rather than over top of it. Hmmm... So I re-attached it in this "new" way and voila! Good ol' DOS popped up when I pushed the ON button!!!!!! So if the same thing happens to you, check that ribbon cable and make sure it's connected properly. BTW, I'm no hardware guy so if I can do it, you can too! Now I just have to re-install my shortcuts & stuff. ...lars (still going to buy a backup unit, though) -------------------------------------------- ***DO NOT POST BINARY FILES TO THIS LIST*** For Unsubscribe requests, FAQ, & List Archives, see : HTTP://www.sp.uconn.edu/~mchem1/HPLX.shtml ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 18:38:00 -0600 Reply-To: HPLX Mailing List , Jeff Johns Sender: HPLX Mailing List From: Jeff Johns Subject: Small Email Program For a small email program I suggest that you go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~sdlsaginaw and grab a copy of Goin' Postal by Steven Lawson. I can't recommend or not recommend rinsing your palmtop, but I can give you advice on the water you use. Of course, don't use Ringer's or any irrigants, but also, don't use common distilled water. It is 'distilled' by reverse osmosis, which is only as good as the porosity od the filter they pressurize against. If you can get distilled water from a 'megapure' still (an actual still) and can get it deionized, that would be your best bet. Even sterile water for injection has some ionns present (it's only sterile). If you have access to a chemistry lab (UCLA?) or a pharmaceutics lab (USC?), they will most certainly have a setup like the one I'm describing. Even some blood chemistry labs (hospital?) may have a still. They will likely have a deionized system as well. Talk nicely, and I'm sure they would give you some. Be sure to rinse your glassware well - some surfactants can leave behind some pretty stubborn residues. Maybe this is overkill, but if I were rinsing mine, ... > ---------- > From: Terrence Chun > Sent: Tuesday, March 31, 1998 5:25 PM > To: HPLX-L@UCONNVM.UCONN.EDU > Subject: The End? I hope you want it for educational purposes and not production! I've been able to run SSQL 3.1 from Silvaware on my 200LX/2Mb. The whole thing can be trimmed down to about 250K. The engine is fast, SQL reasonably implemented, and the entire thing is pretty cool once you see it. Database files are DBF so you can browse them with any standard tool (like DBU from good old Clipper). It is still *far* from real-life usability (at least on 200LX)! Good for learning SQL, bad for betting your business on it! As soon as I try to go there, I get the message, "Record not found". I have tried running garlic.exe to no avail, and also tried extracting the dates before and after into another appointbook book, all to no avail. Does anyone have any more ideas? Well, I found that the Windows version of the HPLX utilities that HP released for it's laptop units is much better at dealing with problem appointment books than even the long trusted "Garlic".... I had an appointment file over 64k with dozens of unbacked-up entries in it. My machine crashed and trashed the file. Nothing I did was able to do anything to save it. I finally, out of desperation found a copy of the Windows utilities and tried importing the damaged file into a fresh appointment file. It managed to salvage over 95% of the entries and the resulting file doesn't have the "Record not found" problem. Give it a try. (I'm -very- sorry, but I don't remember where I found the Windows utilities, but maybe someone else knows where they are?? ) Good luck! --- John L.
